Dare to Wear a Pocket Square

A pocket square adds a brilliant finishing touch to a well arranged ensemble.

It’s subtle presence speaks volumes about the wearers sense of style.  These little additions come in an endless variety of colors, fabrics, and patterns to choose from.  Selecting a pocket square is largely a matter of personal preference.  Here are a few guidelines that you might find helpful.

NELSON WADE Pocket SquareWhen wearing a pocket square, remember that it should add just enough contrast but shouldn’t be so bold so as to clash.  For instance, a solid white square against a solid dark suit is a clean, classic look.  To mix things up a bit, wearing a solid dark suit allows for plenty of room for a colorfully patterned tie, and a colored square that compliments one of the less pronounced colors in the tie.  A more colorfully prominent square can be added when the suit, shirt, and tie are a bit more subdued.

Mixing fabrics provides a nice complimenting contrast as well.  When wearing a wool suit, a smooth silk square provides a good look.  Smooth silk ties allow for textured linen squares.   A heavily textured tie and a smooth silk square contrast nicely.

Pocket squares can be worn in different settings as well.  Adding a square to a suit at a wedding or cocktail party enhances your formal look.  Wearing a pocket square with a suit, with a button down shirt, and without a tie adds a splash of elegance to your dressy casual appearance.  Including a square to your sport coat and trousers shows you pay attention to detail.

At NELSON WADE, we feel all it takes is a little fabric to make a huge impression.
