NELSON WADE, which necktie do I choose to match my shirt?
At NELSON WADE, our clients often ask us for style guidelines on which necktie would look appropriate with their new custom dress shirts. The matching of your custom dress shirt and tie could be one of the keys for a working professional to dress for success today.
For men who are always on the go, let’s look at some basic guidelines to make the necktie selection easy and quick. In today’s mens fashion there are no strict rules for matching colors, so don’t get buried down with how neckties look with each custom dress shirt.
Remember, it’s not rocket science!
A few tips in regards to colors…let’s use a color wheel to help us out visually. A shirt and necktie of the same color can work, but only if the necktie and shirt are in different hues, such as light and dark colors from the same color hue.
Custom dress shirts and neckties colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel are considered to be complimentary colors.
For example, Red is opposite to Green. The high contrast of the two complimentary colors creates a strong contrasting look and it works very well when you want the necktie or your custom dress shirt to stand out. Of course a plain shirt with a plain tie in a contrasting color could create a strong power look.
Then, there is the old standard that you can never go wrong with and that is the white shirt. We always recommend to our clients to have at least 7-14 white shirts in their personal shirt collection. Don’t limit it to only the simple plain weave cotton poplin’s custom dress shirts, but mix it up with white tonal patterns, such as Twills, Super Dobby, Oxford’s or Herringbone, and Chevron patterns.
Another color tip…. when you pick a patterned necktie such as a paisley necktie for example, a color in the tie should match your custom dress shirt color. See the blue paisley color in the image is in the same color hue of the selected fabric for a custom dress shirt. The shirt color is lighter.
Another tip is that you can match the background color of the patterned necktie to your chosen shirt.
How about matching dotted or striped neckties with your custom dress shirts? Now this is where confusion can start to set in. Rule of thumb per say is…always choose a necktie that is similar in color or in contrasting hues and colors of your custom dress shirt.
What about Striped Shirts?
These basic tips always work well…a patterned tie that has the same color in it as the striped shirt or a solid color patterned necktie as one of the stripe colors in your custom dress shirt will work well. Again, use the color wheel for help. If you use a triangle on the color wheel, this can provide additional color options. For example, with a blue striped shirt, you could choose either Yellow-Gold or a Red necktie with a color of the pattern in the custom striped dress shirt.
OK, now it’s time to tackle the hard one…The Checkered Shirt!
When you select a checkered necktie, make sure it is a deeper color hue than your selected dress shirt. Have a strong color contrast!
Another suggestion that we feel is a standard in today’s mens fashion…. the plain tonal pattern color necktie, that matches one of the check colors of the checkered dress shirt. This tip also works with the color of the striped tie!
Now if you want to wear a paisley necktie with a custom checkered shirt, select a toned down pattern paisley necktie that has the check colors of your selected Checkered shirt.
At Ties by NELSON WADE, we feel you can never go wrong with the following basic styles.
For a Gray Suit: Choose a light blue custom dress shirt and yellow patterned necktie or a patterned red tie on white shirt….a true traditional classic combination!
