At the Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change in December, MIT researchers debut the Copenhagen Wheel — a revolutionary new bicycle wheel that not only boosts power, but can keep track of friends, fitness, smog and traffic. Though it looks like an ordinary bicycle wheel with an oversized center, the Wheel’s bright red hub is a veritable Swiss army knife’s worth of electronic gadgets and novel functions.

“Over the past few years we have seen a kind of biking renaissance, which started in Copenhagen and has spread from Paris to Barcelona to Montreal,” says Carlo Ratti, director of the MIT SENSEable City Laboratory and the Copenhagen Wheel project. “It’s sort of like ‘Biking 2.0′ — whereby cheap electronics allow us to augment bikes and convert them into a more flexible, on-demand system.”

The first goal of the Copenhagen Wheel project is to promote cycling by extending the range of distance people can cover and by making the whole riding experience smoother so that even steep inclines are no longer a barrier to comfortable cycling.

Toward this end, the Wheel can store energy every time the rider puts on the brakes, and then give that power back to provide a boost when riding uphill or to add a burst of speed in traffic.

“The Wheel uses a technology similar to the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System), which has radically changed Formula One racing over the past couple of years,” says Ratti. “When you brake, your kinetic energy is recuperated by an electric motor and then stored by batteries within the wheel, so that you can have it back to you when you need it. The bike wheel contains all you need so that no sensors or additional electronics need to be added to the frame and an existing bike can be retrofitted with the blink of an eye.”

“Our city’s ambition is that 50 percent of the citizens will take their bike to work or school every day,” says Ritt Bjerregaard, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen. “So for us, this project is part of the answer to how can we make using a bike even more attractive.”

But there are also a variety of extra functions hidden within the hub of the Copenhagen Wheel. By using a series of sensors and a Bluetooth connection to the user’s iPhone, which can be mounted on the handlebars, the wheel can monitor the bicycle’s speed, direction and distance traveled, as well as collect data on air pollution and even the proximity of the rider’s friends.

“One of the applications that we have discussed with the City of Copenhagen is that of an incentive scheme whereby citizens collect Green Miles — something similar to frequent flyer miles, but good for the environment,” says Christine Outram, who led the team of MIT researchers.

The project also aims to create a platform for individual behavioral change.

“The Copenhagen Wheel is part of a more general trend: that of inserting intelligence in our everyday objects and of creating a smart support infrastructure around ourselves for everyday life,” says Assaf Biderman, associate director of the project. “For example, the Wheel has a smart lock: if somebody tries to steal it, it goes into a mode where the brake regenerates the maximum amount of power, and sends you a text message. So in the worst case scenario the thief will have charged your batteries before you get back your bike.”

The initial prototypes of the Copenhagen Wheel were developed along with company Ducati Energia and the Italian Ministry of the Environment. It is expected that the wheel will go into production next year, with a tag price competitive with that of a standard electric bike. According to Claus Juhl, CEO of Copenhagen, the city might place the first order and use bicycles retrofitted with the Copenhagen Wheel as a substitution for city employee cars as part of the city’s goal to become the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025.

The Copenhagen Wheel team at MIT is composed of Christine Outram, Project Leader, Rex Britter, Andrea Cassi, Xiaoji Chen, Jennifer Dunnam, Paula Echeverri, Myshkin Ingawale, Ari Kardasis, E Roon Kang, Sey Min, Assaf Biderman and Carlo Ratti. The project was developed for the City of Copenhagen in cooperation with Ducati Energia and with the support of the Italian Ministry for the Environment.

Stradalli Cycle, the high performance carbon bicycle manufacturer, is pleased to announce the introduction of the highly anticipated Stradalli Turin high modulus carbon fiber road bike for 2010. Following on from the huge success of the Stradalli Milano Strada-Pro, which was introduced in late 2009 and has been hugely popularity, the Stradalli Turin has been designed to be efficient, robust and yet affordable to the cycling enthusiast.

With the release of the Turin, Stradalli is on the way to providing the public with the least expensive full carbon Sram equipped road bike for racers and weekend warriors alike. The Stradalli Turin is an attractive road bike ready to take riders anywhere they want to go. An affordable, superbly equipped, race ready road bike.

The Turin is available with full Sram Red or Sram Force components. This new innovative frame design provides one of the stiffest and most responsive rides without the need to upgrade to the more expensive BB30 bottom bracket and crank design. This frame encompasses a flawless carbon design with beautiful white accents and immaculate clear coat.

“We want high-tech full carbon bikes to become available to the riders with even tightest budget” said Thomas Steinbacher.

The Stradalli Turin is comparable to bikes offered by Specialized, Trek, Look and Giant but with one massive difference. The Turin uses nearly identical parts to that of the competition but is nearly half the price. One way Stradalli keep costs low is by removing bike shops from the equation and passing the savings onto the customer. You can only get the Stradalli Turin online and at a few selected dealers, which saves the buyer money.

From 2010, BMC bikes will be exclusively stocked at Evans Cycles. Based in Switzerland, BMC are turning heads with their new range of 2010 bikes and impressive pro team signings including George Hincapie and World Champ Cadel Evans. BMC’s philosophy of ‘style, passion, and precision’ is ever apparent through the company and their bikes.

“The pedigree of the brand is undoubted and we’ve been very impressed with the quality of the 2010 range. Bringing BMC into the UK and stocking it in our stores is really exciting and offers British cyclists even more choice when it comes to riding top notch bikes”. says Head Bike Buyer at Evans Cycles, Joel Natale. “Taking them in direct means we can offer these great bikes at realistic prices.”

Evans Cycles will be stocking a range of BMC bikes including road bikes, mountain bikes, women’s specific bikes, and cyclocross bikes. Highlights of the 2010 range, soon to hit the shop floor include:

The 2010 Team Machine SLR 01 (£4,999.99/approx. $7,176.56), BMC’s top end road bike utilises the latest nano technology to produce a bike to satisfy the most demanding of customers. BMC have created the TCC (tuned compliance concept) in this carbon fibre frame to give the bike vertical flexibility – giving you a comfortable yet rigid ride. Combine this with a choice of Campagnolo Super Record, SRAM Red, or Shimano Dura Ace group sets and you’ve got a world class race machine that will definitely turn heads.

The 2010 Streetfire SSX (£1,199.99/approx. $1,721.20) gets a facelift from 2009 but still provides a great starting point for those looking to get into the sport. Combining a lightweight aluminium frame and Shimano 105 component set, the Streetfire is created by the same cutting edge technology that BMC use throughout their range. A great bike for commuting to work or sportive rides on the weekend.

BMC have the mountain bikes covered too. The 2010 Trailfox 02 (£1,999.99/approx. $2,869.97) is perfect for UK trail conditions. This 140mm dual suspension mountain bike is light enough to climb yet strong and nimble to descend with ease. Using Shimano components and suspension from Fox and Rock Shox the Trailfox 02 can handle anything the trail will throw at it.

“If the 2010 range is half as popular as the limited number of 2009 bikes we have in stock they won’t be on the shop floor for long!” says Joel.

Test rides & demo bikes
BMC bikes will be stocked in the majority of Evans Cycles stores from December 2009, where customers can inspect the bikes, and like all bikes stocked at Evans Cycles, take them for a short test ride. For those wanting a more in-depth experience of the new range, key models will be incorporated into the 60 bike strong 2010 Evans Cycles demo fleet – available to try at the Evans Cycles Ride It! event series. A nationwide series of organised off-road and sportive road rides.

About Evans Cycles
Evans Cycles are the UK’s largest quality cycle retailer, currently operating 35 stores nationwide and the UK’s largest cycling mail order & online bike shop. Evans Cycles’ product range spans every cycling discipline and features mountain bikes, road bikes, cycle clothing and bicycle accessories from the world’s leading brands.

For a cycling enthusiast, this could be a dream come true to spend an entire week in France with such a talented cyclist and Olympic gold medal winner.

Tyler Hamilton is probably best known for his win of a stage of the Tour de France in 2003 which he rode with a broken collar bone. “Tyler has a mental strength that few others have,” says Jennifer Sage, Viva Travels founder. “But the best thing about Tyler Hamilton is his down-to-earth nature. He is interested in everyone he is talking to, and everyone on this tour will have ample opportunities to interact with him.”

The tour will travel from the shores of Lake Annecy, near Geneva to the south just outside of Grenoble, over 8 days of cycling. Along the way, riders have the option of climbing up to 13 of the most famous scenic and challenging climbs of the Tour de France, including the Col de la Madeleine, the Col du Galibier, and of course, the mythical Alpe d’Huez. Completing every climb isn’t mandatory however; vans will be available to provide a lift if needed. To prepare for the event, Tyler will provide a training program for each of the riders through his training company, Tyler Hamilton Training.

Accommodations on this tour range from a luxury 4-star abbey on the shores of Lac d’Annecy, to charming mountain chalets, to a renovated ancient chateaux. All breakfasts and dinners are included, and according to Sage, “when you’re riding and climbing this much, you will be able to eat almost anything. The restaurants we’ve chosen will go all out to prepare us their most impressive gastronomic meals. The dining on this tour will be almost as much fun as the cycling!”

Few opportunities like this come along at a price this affordable. Sage had the opportunity to be a guide on a bicycle tour to the Tour de France with Greg Lemond back in 1999. “You can’t imagine how thrilling it is to pick the brain of such a cycling great, to get tips on climbing and descending, to ask your most pressing training or technique questions. Everyone was in awe as Greg would tell stories at lunch or dinner. And then you get to ride with him every day!” She added, “It will be very similar with Tyler. He’ll give a few talks on technique each evening, and tell stories about every major climb the night before we tackle them!”

Viva Travels is also leading two tours to the Tour de France in July, one to the Alps and one to the Pyrénées.

Born of Pinarello’s racing heritage, the Treviso can be ridden fast where its quick handling and lithe agility shine and yet it is comfortable and mild mannered on a leisurely Sunday afternoon.

Treviso is the name of our city, where we were born and where our company, Pinarello is headquartered. To Treviso we devote this fast frame, versatile and manageable in perfect Pinarello style. A frame in aluminum 6061 T6 triple layers, TIG welded. It’s got Most Edho wheels, light and thin, to go fast through city traffic or to face a long distance comfortably. Straight handlebars allow a semi upright position. The Treviso is a very versatile bike used by many cyclists as a second bicycle, for the time after the race or on holiday to keep in shape. Weighing 1600 grams, it is sold as a complete bike with Shimono Sora group in 4 sizes and 5 new colors.

At NELSON WADE, we recommend this bicycle! It’s a great form of transportation in the city, it’s green and it’s healthy for you!

An organic garden and kitchen feed hungry guests after days of touring on hotel-owned Orbea bicycles, rooftop swimming and botanical spa treatments.

The 62-room luxury hotel, spa with a 92-seat restaurant and bar are situated on an old family farmstead in the tiny town of Yountville, famously home to such three-star restaurants as The French Laundry. The property blends itself into the surrounding community through a series of extended community walking paths.

Every day is Earth Day at Napa Valley’s new green hotel.

Before the hotel even opened, contractors Cello Maudru distinguished the property by recycling 93 percent of all construction waste. Now in its second month Bardessono fills approximately half of its electricity need from a 200-kilowatt photovoltaic solar system discreetly mounted and concealed atop the hotel’s flat roofs. To heat and cool guest rooms as well as the property’s water supply, a system of seventy-two 300-foot geothermal wells were drilled the hotel vineyard and integrated with a specially developed ground source heat pump system.

Structurally as well as aesthetically, the Bardessono makes prodigious use of “up-cycled” materials including recycled steel, green glass tiles as well as fly ash concrete. (Fly ash, a glass-like powder recovered from gases created by coal-fired electric power generation, is a recyclable material often used as a replacement for Portland cement). Salvaged wood from locally-sourced Monterey Cypress, Walnut, Redwood, Eucalyptus and California Bay Laurel trees has been used for everything from siding and ceiling beams to furniture and bathroom flooring. Locally quarried Tuffa stone, salvaged and re-cut from the Bardessono family’s original home, adorns the hotel’s entry way as well as its reception and dining areas.

Sherburne’s creation, which opened this winter, proves that deep green living is a fresh pleasure. His rooftop swimming pool lends rare views of the Stags Leap Palisades and Mayacamas Mountains while offering private poolside cabanas and a pizza oven. Guest rooms benefit from generous amounts of natural light as well as private courtyards. All rooms are equipped for in-room spa services and some feature both indoor and outdoor showers. A few have outdoor heated Sonoma Stone tubs. Bed linens, towels and robes are made from locally sourced organic cotton, all of which is green certified.

A one-time University of Oregon student activist-turned urban policy planner, Sherburne began his career not in private development but public housing. Before that, he lived on his family’s Oregon dairy farm. It is this combined experience that Sherburne carried with him into the development business more than 20 years ago with the creation of Decatur Northwest in the San Juan Islands. It is his touchstone for creating developments that balance business interests with that of the public and nature large.

Gavin Bikes designs and manufactures high quality, low cost road bikes which are sold exclusively online. Gavin Bikes sells bikes directly to consumers and the resulting savings realized are 50% below comparable bikes from the leading bicycle manufacturers.

Gavin Bikes designs and manufactures high quality, low cost road bikes. Our bikes are exclusively sold online. By taking distributors and brick and mortar stores out of the equation, the savings passed to customers are phenomenal.

Today Gavin Bikes announces the introduction of three new road bikes for 2009: Gavin Nuovo Triathlon TT Bike, Gavin Acele Road Racing Bike, and the Gavin Linea 2009 Full Carbon Road Bike.

The popular Gavin Durus has been redesigned by adding new light weight aluminum forks and a new wheel set. The 2009 bikes have just arrived and sales are reminiscent of the Durus launch.

In 2008 Gavin Bikes introduced the Gavin Durus. Consumers responded with such resounding enthusiasm that we quickly sold out of bikes! Based on the overwhelming success of the Gavin Durus our designers created three new bike models and updated the DURUS. The Gavin DURUS remains the least expensive Shimano STI equipped road bike.

The Gavin Durus is an attractive road bike ready to take riders anywhere they want to go. An affordable, superbly equipped entry level road bike, perfect for anything from long tours to local fitness cycling. This versatile and inexpensive bike will provide years of enjoyment. A comparable bike like the The KHS Flite 300, Giant OC3, and the Trek 1.2 are made with nearly identical components – but are nearly double the price!

Acele

The Gavin Acele is made of the finest grade aluminum, is ultra-lightweight, resilient and has an excellent strength to weight ratio. Coupled with carbon forks and superior Shimano 105 components, the ACELE is an extremely responsive road bike for those wanting to invest in a higher performing road bike. Comparable high performing road bikes like the Trek 2.1, Giant Defy 1, Fuji Newest 1.0, Jamis Ventura Race, KHS Flite 320, GT GTR Series 2 are made with nearly identical components, and are nearly double the price. Compare and save.

Nuovo

The Gavin Nuovo Road Racing / Triathlon frame is made with the finest grade aluminum. The Nuovo is an extremely responsive triathlon bike, and a perfect fit for entry level triathletes or racers. For individuals starting out in triathlons or those who have a few under their belt, the Nuovo will help you exceed your goals for the next event. The Gavin Nuovo is the best valued tri-bike on the market today. For those entry level triathletes wanting a great value, compare the Nuovo to the Trek 1.5, Giant Defy 2, Schwinn Fastback Comp, Fuji Newest 2.0, Jamis Ventura Sport, KHS Flite 500, GT GTR Series 4.

Linea

The Linea Gavin’s full carbon road bike is a full carbon road bike with Shimano components and a high modulus carbon fiber frame with replaceable derailleur hanger. Why buy an aluminum frame bike with Ultegra components from Trek or Specialized when you can get the full carbon Linea for less.

The Durus sets new standards for a light weight, comfortable, sleek road bike at an incredibly affordable price. The Gavin Nuovo is perfect for entry level triathalon bike due to its exceptionally responsive nature and components. The Gavin Acele, with its superior Shimano components is receiving high acclaim from experienced cyclists for being lightweight and the price is, “…astoundingly low”. Last but not least, the Gavin Linea, the full carbon is simply the most competitively priced full carbon road bike on the market today.

Each bike retails 50% below comparable bikes from other manufacturers like Trek, Giant, and KSH.

Gavin Road Bikes are designed to provide riders with a sleek, comfortable cycle at an unbeatable price.
Cyclists need more than just powerful quads and chiseled calves. Cyclists need total body strength-a strong core and solid upper body-to ride with power and endurance. Put simply, stronger muscles last longer and stabilize the body, improving technique and efficiency.

Weight Training for Cyclists is the only book available that shows cyclists how they can get stronger to ride stronger. The authors explain how strength training in the weight room translates to endurance and power on the bike.

New in this second edition are easy-to-follow drawings that clearly demonstrate strength training exercises. Doyle and Schmitz update exercises to include the newest weight training equipment and present the latest information from new research on core strength, nutrition, stretching, and warm-up.

Among other things, most people’s New Year’s Resolution is to improve their heath. They vow to eat healthy, to loose a few pounds, and join a gym to start working out. Like anything else we try to start or stop doing, it is very difficult to stick to your plan in the short term. Studies show that if you can get past the first 30 days, you’ve got a real shot at change. Within the 30 day time frame, old tendencies and bad habits struggle to replace good intentions and if you’re not tough on yourself, you’ll be back to your old ways.

A friend of mine once told me that his motto in life is “stay ready, so you don’t ever have to get ready”. I thought that applies perfectly to health and fitness. The hardest thing to do is to get in shape, but once you get there it’s much easier to stay in shape.

One of the ways to get in shape and stay there is to Try a Tri-athlon. Triathlons are held several times a year throughout the county. Check bike shops and sporting goods stores in your area to get details about any in your area. Triathlons include 3 main disciplines; swimming, cycling, running. At first you may be thinking of an Ironman contest were athletes compete for about 8+ continuous hours of grueling physical exertion. Unless you intend on becoming a pro athlete, that level of dedication isn’t necessary to get fit. You might find however, that you love triathlon and Ironman could be a goal someday in the future. Here are some ways to work up to that level of competition;

Sprint Triathlon (500 meter swim, 20k bike, 5k run)
There are two types of people who sign up for the Sprint; those who are new to triathlon, and “sprinters”. Sprinters will travel all around the country to compete. Some people find that this triathlon is too fast. They feel that just when they get their rhythm its time to switch to the next event, then the next, then the competition is over. However, for beginners this opens the door to a whole new sport.

Olympic Triathlon (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run)
If you enjoyed the Sprint, and you’re ready for something a bit more challenging, it may be time to do an Olympic. This triathlon allows you to enjoy each event, get your rhythm, and make up for lost time on an event that you may not be as efficient at. In other words, you may not be a strong swimmer, but running is a breeze. So, you can make up for lost time on the running event.

Half Ironman Triathlon (1.9k swim, 90k bike, 21.1k run)
If you find that you’ve woken up the old college athlete in you, and you’ve got your lungs and legs back, then the “Half” is your next step. This triathlon requires significant attention given to your nutrition and training all year long. You’ll need to be fairly strict with yourself in your everyday life if you want to compete at a high level.

Ironman Triathlon (3.86k swim, 180k bike, 42.2k run)
If you still have more left in the tank, this event will be sure to take the rest – and some. Training for Ironman requires a change in lifestyle. How much of a change will be up to you. Sure, you’re still allowed days off to cheat and sneak in some junk food, but by this time you’ll more than likely be turned off by most anything that could break down the “temple” you’ve built that is your body.

The Gear
Researching the Internet, you’ll find there are many shops that specialize in Triathlon equipment. As with anything, having the right gear makes all the difference in the world.

The Swim
You’ll want to wear a wetsuit, especially if you’re a beginner. Wetsuits don’t just keep you warm; they’ll keep you buoyant and moving through the water’s surface efficiently. The emphasis during the swim is to focus on your upper body muscles, preserving your legs as much as possible. Over time, you’ll also develop techniques to help you maximize each stroke. Goggles and a swim cap are also very helpful.

The Tri Bike
This is the most costly part of Triathlon. Tri bikes are very light weight, strong, fast, and they look cool too. The bike’s geometry puts your body in an aerodynamic position, allowing you to cut through the air. The seat position is at a degree where you’ll maximize the muscles in your quads, thereby saving your hamstrings and calves for the run. A good entry level carbon fiber tri-bike starts at around $2,000 so you’ll want to be sure you really enjoy Triathlon before you invest.

The Run

Be sure to invest in a good pair of running shoes. Steer clear of the generic sporting goods stores and talk to the running experts. They’ll evaluate exactly how you run and will fit you into an appropriate shoe. The sole of running shoes provides you with needed support in specific areas. This is essential in helping you preserve your shins, knees, and hips. Also, be sure to never run in new shoes. Walk around in them for a few weeks to break them in. Then, take them out for a few jogs before race day.

The benefits to doing triathlons is that you can do them twice a year; once in the spring and again in the fall. Committing yourself to doing so will mean that you’ll train and eat right all year long. That means you’ll stay fit and won’t have to get fit.
