The difference between wearing a Button Cuff shirt and French Cuff shirt is in your mindset. It is determined by the style you feel comfortable wearing. Today, the most important rules in men’s fashions are…that there are NO rules, the old rules no longer apply!

Men looking for custom dress shirts today have more possibilities than ever before. For example NELSON WADE allows the customer to design their own shirt for their particular sense of unique style. By selecting from thousands of different fabrics and choosing many details and/or creating a detail that is totally unique, you become the architect of your elegant style.

Today men can choose the Button Cuff or the French Cuff for a variety of business or social environments. The Button Cuff is a standard fare and of course the French Cuff is the dressier of the shirt sleeve cuffs .

Nevertheless, a Button Cuff is really suitable for some professional events, such as a job interview. At NELSON WADE, our Button Cuffs which are also called barrel cuffs have buttonholes on the one side and buttons on the other. Sometimes they can be designed to have additional buttons for adjusted fitment.

The Double Cuff, a.k.a “French Cuff” which has buttonholes on both sides are meant to be closed with cufflinks or silk knots. NELSON WADE offers the French Cuff in a variety of styles. Basic styles are round corner, square corner, cutaway, contoured cuffs.

French Cuffs were once considered to be worn for formal events only. Although, over the last 25 years they have resurged in the successful business environment.

Traditional formal or dress attire required that French Cuffs be worn with a tie and jacket. However over the last few years, due to business casual, French Cuffs with classy form of cufflinks, as pictured here are worn without tie and Jacket.

The advent of so many different materials and styles of cufflinks has also offered opportunities to wear casual custom shirts with fun or unique cufflinks casual events, such as a cocktail party or shopping at your favorite toy store, ie. the local Ferrari, Porsche or Lambo dealership.

As indicated in our image here, a set of chess pieces can have a fun presentation. I often get asked…is that the Knight from a chess set?

There seems to be an ongoing debate over whether a custom shirt should be monogrammed…again, it comes back to what the owner of that custom shirt feels comfortable wearing.

Yes, a monogrammed shirt is not necessary. But it does add a very distinctive elegance to the custom shirt. I personally have monograms on my dress and casual shirts. At NELSON WADE, we offer Diamond Script Letters and Block Style Monograms.

For casual custom shirts, we usually suggest and offer the Diamond Script. We suggest letters and a thread color that is similar to the main shirt pattern color so that it doesn’t stand out too strong.

So in the end, “Is it French or Button?

At NELSON WADE we feel it’s what the customer feels comfortable wearing for his particular occasion. The fashion rules of old have certainly changed with the continual growth of our modern society. So have fun and develop a distinctive sense of style in fashion, that is you!

Our sleeve connection to the shirt body and side body seam has double row stitch. But only one row of stitching is visible for that finer, hand sewn custom tailored appearance.

Our buttons for custom shirts are either Extra Thick Real Mother of Pearl buttons or regular durable plastic shirt buttons are available. Contrasting cross stitch thread color is another option for unique style. We provide additional buttons in the front pleat design for longer shirt bodies, so you never have the problem of too few buttons!

Shirt sleeve cuffs for custom shirts are hand cut and hand turned. The two part placket is finished with buttons and buttonhole or double button hole for French Cuffs. The shirt sleeve french cuffs can be design to your personal taste at no extra charge.

Shirts Tails are always an issue for most taller gentlemen. Our shirt tails either front or back are always custom cut full in length, so that they won’t pop out.

Pockets for our custom shirts are all hand cut and hand matched to the fabric pattern. The Shirt Yoke of the custom shirt is a two piece shirt yoke that is top stitched at the front and back of shirt.

Our Custom Shirt Collars from NELSON WADE are hand cut in height and width. They are individually designed to your personal taste. We also have a variety of basic Collar designs that you can choose from as well.

All these details to create an elegant custom shirt are from NELSON WADE.

For Spots & Stains on your necktie…
Most silk neckties are not stain resistant, so avoid the STAINS! If you get a stain, address it right away! Dab a little seltzer water for water soluble stains. For oil based stains, use talcum powder as soon as possible. Dry Clean your necktie only as a last resort.
